Day 1 – ARRIVAL -
Meet on arrival at the airport. Transfer to Kigali.

 

 

 

 


Overnight: Hotel Novotel (BLD) or Motel Hellenique or equivalent (BLD)


    Day 2/3- AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK -
Early start to the Akagera National Park. As well as being home to the shy oribi and to the elusive topi, the Highlands afford a breathtaking view across the undulating hills, rolling grassland to the extensive series of lakes, linked by papyrus swamps. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, waterbuck are some of the game roaming this peaceful heaven. The bird life is also remarkable. The diverse habitats of the area are home to over 500 species of birds.

Overnight: Akagera Game Lodge (BLD) or Hotel Umbrella Kibungo or equivalent (BLD)


    Day 4 – KIGALI – VIRUNGA NATIONAL PARC -
After an early morning game drive, continue to Kigali. Visit the town. After lunch in a small garden, we follow the road as it climbs to the base of the majestic volcanoes, with spectacular views across the five peaks. Arrive at Kinigi.

Overnight: Gorillas’ Nest (BLD) or Village Touristique de Kinigi (BLD) or Centre de Charite de Remera (BLD)


Day 5 - MOUNTAIN GORILLAS -
As the first light of dawn breaks through the curtain of mist clinging to the summits of Karisimbi, Bisoke, Sabyniyo, Gahinga and Muhabura, we make our way into the Parc National des Volcans. Tracking the gorillas through the unique vegetation can take several hours of challenging walking in wet and muddy conditions. To see a gorilla, the trek will have been worth the hardship. In the afternoon travel to Gisenyi, a busy town on the shore of Lake Kivu.

Overnight: Kivu Sun  (BLD) or Mission de Kigufi (BLD) or Hotel Regina (BLD)


    Day 6 - LAKE KIVU -
En route to Kibuye, enjoy the fantastic views over Lake Kivu and its ragged shore. Experience the peaceful atmosphere of the calm and pristine waters of Africa’s highest lake from the terrace of your hotel.

Overnight: Guesthouse (BLD) or Centre Bethanie de Kibuye (BLD)


    Day 7 – LAKE AND HILLS -
After a refreshing early morning swim and a hearty breakfast, we continue toward south, along the lakeshore. There is plenty of opportunity for shopping and meeting villagers at the colourful market places. Stop at a huge tea plantation.

Overnight: Guesthouse de Gisakura (BLD)


    Day 8 - NYUNGWE FOREST -
Covering 970 km2, the Highlands provide unique habitat for thirteen species of primate, including chimpanzees, l'Hoest's and owl-faced monkey. As you walk under the canopy of majestic trees, a large group of almost semi wild colobus monkeys can be seen feeding on wild figs and jumping from branch to branch. This high altitude jungle floor boasts some of the most beautiful orchids in the world. Drive to Butare.

Overnight: Hotel Ibis (BLD)


    Day 9 – BUTARE – KIGALI – DEPARTURE -
Visit the National Museum. It is a must for anybody who is interested in African history. In the late afternoon, drive to Kigali and transfer to the airport.
